The Mayor’s budget contains significant cuts to the child care system. New York’s children deserve more than a game of musical chairs. In this budget, at least 7,000 fewer children from low-income working families will have access to child care next year, estimates the Emergency Coalition to Save Child Care.
These cuts are a dramatic reversal of the City’s promise to expand early learning opportunities for our children – as well as a retreat from the Mayor’s public statements in support of the city’s working families.
Tens of thousands of young children who need to be prepared for school will enter kindergarten behind, and stay behind. Tens of thousands of parents will be left scrambling to find a safe, educational place for their children while they are at work.
Studies show cutting child care will cost taxpayers millions in the long run – in increased costs for remedial education, grade retention and lower graduation rates. Taxpayers in New York City will bear the brunt of these unwise choices.
